Smart System® FirstTest™

The Smart System FirstTest™ Vision Screening System was developed to increase the quality of vision screening of children to capture amblyopia, strabismus and identify differences in the development of the eyes at a very early age. This technology includes a standardized test by age group, reducing errors and interpretation; the administrator of the test simply presses “correct” or “incorrect” according to the child’s response.

KeyFeatures of FirstTest™

Software
FirstTest™ is typically sold as a software program that can be installed on any PC based computer system. It can also be purchased as a complete system including hardware or software or loaded on a laptop for portability. Simply select the symbol set, select the type of display (single line, single letter with crowding bars, or masked line), enter the child’s age and screening begins. The system is controlled by a mini wireless remote control and takes less than 2 minutes per eye.

Protocol
FirstTest™ This automated technology allows the user to select peer reviewed and calibrated LEA Symbols, LEA Numbers, HOTV, Snellen Letters or the traditional Allen Pictures. Each algorithm by age group follow the screening requirements of the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics), AAPOS (American Academy of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus), AOA (American Academy of Optometry) and AAO (American Academy of Ophthalmology). Furthermore, the systems are configurable to comply with state screening requirements in schools or other state funded institutions. So whether you’re a pediatrician, a technician, school nurse or a volunteer conducting free vision screenings, FirstTest™ is the solution.

User Friendly
A significant advantage of this system is that it is not required that the technician or nurse be trained in vision or vision testing. The software does all the work interpreting inputs and making decisions behind the scenes to either increase or decrease letter size to advance the algorithm. Simultaneously, the software evaluates the visual acuity threshold and differences between the development of the eyes and finally checks to see in the results fall within the standard. Results are displayed on the screen and a determination made as to whether or not to refer the child to a pediatric ophthalmologist for further evaluation.
